OMG, I have never read such a load of self-masterbatory wish-fulfilment bullshit.

The author is, I'm guessing, painting what he thinks of as this perfect wonderful utopia, plops a Mary Sue stand-in from our world, and uses that stand-in to point out how much "better" this liber-topia is.

Admittedly, a Mary Sue "fish out of water" is kind of the best way to DO such a story, but oh my god, are you fucking kidding me. The scene where he's being basically shouted at by that one girl because HOW DARE HE HOLD SUCH OUTDATED ANTIFREEDOM VALUES and it reads so much like the author lecturing us. The constant: "Well, in my world, we do X!"; "Our world is better, because Y!" without ever bothering to address the negative consequences that go with Y - only the negatives associated with X, and none of the positives. It's all overly simplistic, late at night sitting around, high as fuck in a freshman dorm, thinking you've come up with the answers (in an half hour) to questions people have wrestled with for thousands of years, level logic. "Man, if only people'd give libertarianism a REAL CHANCE. We could fix EVERYTHING, man!"

WHY THE FUCK IS EVERYONE SMOKING. The guy doesn't realize what a great indictment of his own world that is!

I'm the first to advocate for "everyone has the freedom to kill him/herself with whatever substances they want" on paper. I also recognize that in the real world (as with almost every "common sense conclusion on an issue) it's more complex than that. I think the government does have an interest in protecting some folks who are particularly vulnerable. Addiction is a real thing, with a possible genetic component. Treating it as ONLY an issue of individual choice and responsibility, especially when the initial choice is often made when still too young to fully comprehend the life-long consequences, is just the kind of heartlessness I expect from libertarians.

So, in this world, everyone's smoking, because FREEEEDOM! Which makes sense. Without the healthy public awareness campains and certain regulations we had in the 20th century, largely funded and/or administrated by governments, most folks wouldn't even understand the addictive properties of tabacco. The companies denied it (and the other stuff they added in there) for years, as did they deny the negative health consequences of lifelong use.

So, yay, it's a libertarian paradise! Where the incidence of lung cancer is probably five times that of our own world. Hooray! FREEDOM!!!

And this jackhole thinks he's painting a MORE DESIRABLE world by showing smoking, of all things. "Woohoo! The monkey cigarette girl offered us pot! How revolutionary and scandalous and free this new world must be! COUGH COUGH COUGH!"
