Pretty okay with most country that isn't super slick w/ polished production. Old-time/outlaw/progressive/alt country are all fine; the related genres - cowboy songs, western swings, country blues, - are also good.

Basically my rule is: no Nashville pop-stars singing about their "[BRAND]-truck" or the American flag or about how much they love both those things (trucks, flags) and love to have literal sex with those things.

I'd just like to point out that being a longhaired, dope-smoking YIPPIE was pretty much being a badass.

Shit Abby Hoffman and Jerry Rubin pretty much dealt the deathblow to the House UnAmerican Activities Comittee by openly mocking them and everything they stood for.

And when you're charged with crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot...when your entire plan involves advancing a Pig as a presidential candidate - it's pretty awesome to show up in court wearing judges robes, and then when you're told to remove the judge robes, you DO only to reveal a police uniform underneath.

Whether you agree with the Yippies or not, that's fuckin' awesome.

You know what's funny? Looking back on early country music - good deal of it was proletarian.

In fact, one of the earliest uses of the term "redneck" was used to describe the red bandannas worn by striking coal miners in PA, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Red has always been the communist/socialist color, and it was clear that their acceptance of coal miners of african descent (who also wore the bandannas) you see a distinct anti-racist, pro internationalist stance, which is the hallmark of traditional leftist thought.

It's so weird that the term migrated to take it's nearly opposite meanng in the seventies, and then contemporarily was re-branded as a positive term used to self-describe racist, anti-union, pro-statist, consumer driven, nationalist reactionaries.

Saw them play with Steve Martin on Friday night. Went to the concert with goodDan because banjos.
