SQL came from an era when people still thought that if you just made the right language, non-technical, businessy people could create and maintain software. See also: COBOL.

SQL also never had a reference implementation, so when the specifications were written no one realized that they were missing critical features.

As a result, SQL sucks. Relational databases are totally rad, though. It's a shame that the only way to safely interface with them is through SQL.
