So turns out that the Tea Party is waging war on taxes, as usual. To be fair, the 1$ tax increase only applies to the Pulaski county Library Board. Campbell county proposed a whopping 20$ a year tax increase. Apparently the situation came about because of some confusion over tax law, a matter which was discovered when the Tea Party reacted badly to the idea of a tax unapproved of by voters, and set a lawyer to find a way to halt it. The Tea Party then sued, and sued HARD. The Judge ruled in favor of the Tea Party, and demanded that Library Boards roll back their tax rates by several decades. This would lead to funding being slashed by 50% or more, depending on the county.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for proper legal procedure. However, this is one of those cases where upholding the law so stringently has such devastating consequences that it might just be smarter to hold back on the slash-and-burn techniques and find smart alternatives that are procedurally sound yet pragmatic.
Needless to say,
But then again, fuck taxes. Amirite?
